16 Essential Motorcycle Service Points for Manual Bikes

16 Essential Motorcycle Service Points - Manual Bikes Complete Routine Maintenance Checklist

Based on our video demonstration: 16 Essential Motorcycle Service Points - This is a standard light service for manual transmission motorcycles. The number of points may vary by shop, but this checklist covers what every rider should check.

Why This 16-Point Service Matters

For manual transmission bikes (Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki), routine light service every 2,000-4,000 km or 2 months prevents 90% of roadside breakdowns. This is not a heavy overhaul - it's the periodic maintenance that keeps your bike safe, fuel-efficient, and long-lasting.

The Complete 16-Point Checklist

1. Engine Oil Level & Condition

Check level via dipstick or sight glass. Replace every 2,000-3,000 km with JASO MA/MA2 oil. Look for metal particles.

2. Oil Filter Screen & Rotor Filter Cleaning

Often missed in quick services. Clean the oil filter screen and centrifugal rotor filter - especially on Honda underbone/manual bikes.

3. Air Filter Cleaning / Replacement

Clean foam type with air filter oil, or replace paper type. A clogged filter causes sputtering at high RPM and poor fuel economy.

4. Spark Plug Inspection

Check gap (0.6-0.8mm typical), clean carbon, replace if electrode is worn. Brown/tan color = perfect burn.

5. Battery & Charging System

Check voltage (12.4V+ at rest), clean terminals, check electrolyte if conventional. Test charging at 5,000 RPM: 13.5-14.5V.

6. Drive Chain Slack & Lubrication

Standard slack: 20-30mm. Clean with chain cleaner, lube with chain lube (not used oil). Check sprocket teeth wear.

7. Tire Pressure & Tread

Front typically 29 psi, rear 33 psi (check manual). Check for cracks, uneven wear, and embeded objects.

8. Brake System - Fluid, Pads & Free Play

Check brake fluid level, pad thickness (>2mm), and lever/pedal free play. Bleed if fluid is dark or spongy.

9. Clutch Cable Free Play

10-20mm at lever end. Too tight causes slipping, too loose causes hard shifting.

10. Throttle Cable Free Play

2-6mm free play. Ensure smooth return and no sticking.

11. Lights, Signals & Horn

Test headlight high/low, tail light, brake light (both levers), turn signals, and horn.

12. Steering & Suspension Check

Check for loose head bearings (push/pull front fork), check fork oil leaks, rear shock play.

13. Fuel Line & Carburetor / Injector

Check for leaks, check fuel filter, drain carburetor float bowl if needed. For PGM-FI, check for MIL codes.

14. Cooling System / Engine Cleaning

For liquid-cooled: check coolant level. For air-cooled: clean dust from cylinder fins.

15. Bolt & Nut Torque Check

Check critical bolts: axle, engine mounting, handlebar, exhaust. Use torque wrench per Honda service specs.

16. Final Test Ride & Idle Adjustment

Set idle at 1,400-1,500 RPM when warm. Test ride for unusual noises, vibrations, or pulling.
